Maryland Ornithological Society annual convention design
My design process.
Ocean City... November... a sea duck came to mind, easily observable from shore, familiar to most North American birders. I've always loved watching red-breasted mergansers hunt for fish, a flock of them cruises along, occasionally dips their heads down to have a look, then dives en masse in pursuit of their quarry. When they pop back to the surface, their shaggy crests are sleeked by the water and they continue the hunt. The bright red serrated bill and equally red eye add to the wild look of these serious aquatic predators.
The design was created entirely on my mac laptop using a drawing program called Inkscape. The t-shirt design, at about 9" across, was a generous canvas for detail - and I had a lot of fun adding shading to the crest, sparkle to the eye, and so on.
